2009 World BMX Championships
Adelaide Showgrounds, July 2009
The opportunity to host the World BMX Championships, held at the Adelaide Showgrounds in July 2009, provided Adelaide with yet another opportunity to prove itself as the cycling capital of Australia and ASR Events with another opportunity to demonstrate its expertise on a world stage . A UCI (International Cycling Union) sanctioned event, the championships drew over 2000 participants of all ages travelling from 33 countries to compete. Over the four days of the event an impressive 20,000 people were captivated by the thrills and spills provided by the incredible action. Managed locally by the team at Life Leisure Events Management Inc. who were supported by a team of over 100 workers and volunteers, the event was deemed an incredible success by all who attended or participated in it.
One stop shop for event infrastructure
The championships gave ASR - Events an opportunity to utilise a broad range of its equipment, skills and expertise. The specific demands of this event required a great deal of innovation and problem solving. As Darrilyn Wood, General Manager of Life Leisure Events Management Inc. puts it - ASR is 'a one stop shop for providing the infrastructure for these types of events requiring stages, ramps and seating.
ASR Events provided the following for the event;
- Temporary grandstand seating consisting of 4 separate grandstands providing 3,500 seats. Very tight build times and a very tightly coordinated schedule working in closely with the other contractors on site. The positioning of the grandstands added to the 'arena' type feel of the event as in the past only 'trailer mounted' bleachers had been used.
- A wheelchair access ramp and platform
- The installation of the 'start/ finish arch'
- The building of the 5 metre high starting ramp provided ASR with the biggest challenge, one which ASR Events Supervisor Rob Brandish saw as an opportunity to draw upon his considerable expertise in this area. The ramp consisted of a carefully designed scaffold structure with an entry ramp leading up to it allowing for very easy and safe access for the riders. The ramp was topped with two layers of plywood which was perhaps the most critical aspect of the whole build. The ramp also incorporated a specially designed start /finish gate.
A coordinated approach
The whole process had to be timed so that ASR could build the eastern wall grandstands before the 5,500 tonnes of soil was delivered for the track builders. The soil was trucked in overnight two days after the initial commencement so that it did not interrupt the build process. While the track builders honed the first and second berms and straights, ASR had already built the second wall of grandstands on the western side of the pavilion. It took a further 3 days to complete the whole task – grandstands, starting ramp + extras and of course the track itself. The overall process was carefully planned and well executed. Both UCI and BMX Australia were delighted with the outcome, which was evident, by the commendations and accolades from all over the world as seen on websites and blog messages. The riders liked the starting ramp and the track, the public loved the seating (only had bleachers before) and the great views they had of the whole event. The atmosphere during the event was exciting.
High level customer service
Customer service -from the administration to graphic design, from planning to the build crews has been very commendable. Nothing was too much trouble and the experts, where needed, were consulted at all times. The on-site supervisor Rob Brandish was also very cooperative and amenable at all times – even through some of the challenges placed before him. He and his team worked safely and very effectively at all times. With all the things commanding my attention it was great to know I could leave the ASR guys to go about their business.
